• Permit: check your city's rule. The City of Marietta exempts a single home lot; Kennesaw requires a $25 permit; Roswell, Sandy Springs, and Alpharetta have their own rules.
• Creeks and the river: Georgia keeps a 25-foot buffer along streams, Dunwoody 75 feet, and the Chattahoochee corridor runs 2,000 feet from the river.
• Buried lines: contact Georgia 811 at least 3 business days before any stump grinding or digging.
• Overhead lines: work within 10 feet of a line over 750 volts needs 72 hours' notice through Georgia 811.
• The wood: the City of Marietta will not pick up a tree a tree company cuts down, and Georgia EPD bans burning land-clearing debris in Cobb County all year. Put haul-off in the quote.
• Insurance: a tree that hits an insured structure is generally covered, with removal up to about $500 to $1,000; a tree that hits nothing generally is not.
