Stump Grinding in Marietta, GA
The tree is gone but the stump is still there, catching mower blades, tripping the kids, and quietly turning into a termite hotel. We grind it out below grade so the spot goes back to being just lawn.
What stump grinding involves
A stump grinder is a purpose-built machine with a rotating wheel of carbide teeth that chews the stump and its major surface roots down into chips. We grind the stump 8 to 12 inches below grade as standard, which is deep enough for you to put down grass or a shallow planting bed and never know a tree was there. For spots where you plan to build, we can go deeper and chase the larger roots.
Grinding produces a mound of wood chips and soil. By default we backfill the hole with those grindings, since digging out and hauling everything adds cost and the ground settles either way. We rake it out and leave a slight mound that levels as it settles. If you would rather have the grindings hauled off and clean topsoil brought in, just ask and we will quote it that way.
Why you do not want to leave a stump
- It is a trip hazard, especially a low, weathered stump hiding in the grass where nobody sees it until they catch a toe.
- It destroys mower blades and makes that whole corner of the yard a pain to maintain.
- It attracts pests. In Georgia's climate a rotting stump becomes prime real estate for termites and carpenter ants, and you do not want that colony near the house.
- It can sprout back. Many hardwoods send up suckers from a live stump, so you end up fighting a cluster of new growth for years.
A note on our red clay
Georgia's dense red clay is tough on grinding. It packs hard, holds moisture, and dulls teeth faster than sandy soil, and big oak and pine stumps in this ground can have wide, stubborn root flares. That is not a problem, it just means the right machine and sharp teeth matter. We come prepared for the clay so the job gets done in one visit instead of turning into a fight with the ground.
Honest price range
Single stumps commonly run from about $100 to $400 depending on diameter and access, and we usually price by the inch of stump width. Multiple stumps in one visit bring the per-stump cost down. Hauling grindings off and importing topsoil is an add-on. Estimates are free.
Stump grinding questions
We grind stumps 8 to 12 inches below grade as standard, which is deep enough to plant grass or a shallow bed over the spot. If you plan to install a patio, driveway, or foundation over the area, tell us and we can grind deeper and chase major surface roots.
Grinding produces a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. By default we backfill the hole with the grindings and leave the area raked and mounded slightly, since it settles over time. If you want the grindings hauled off and clean topsoil brought in instead, we can do that for an added cost.
A leftover stump is a trip hazard, it wrecks mower blades, and in Georgia it becomes prime habitat for termites and carpenter ants that you do not want that close to the house. It can also sprout new suckers. Grinding removes the problem for good.
